Abstract

As the environmental settings are becoming more uncertain due to the rapidly changing requirements, companies must learn to adapt and become fast learners to stay competitive. This paper addresses the digital transition of the shop floor management (SFM) level, by investigating what position six large manufacturing companies currently are in and what they are aiming for in the future. Applying a pragmatic approach this paper study SFM board meetings in six large manufacturing companies with the purpose to secure an understanding of how to ensure stronger data and information management through a digital transition. Findings are; applying data in a smarter way is important and necessary to increase the quality of the SFM level. The leadership- and technological capabilities are the main dimensions to focus on for a digital transition. A strong balance between these are important, and our findings suggest that the maturity state of the leadership capabilities set the pace for a digital transition at the SFM level.
