Evidence-informed improvement work: from promise to praxis

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

The presentation describes an approach to evidence-informed improvement work in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) as well as research into the use of data and research-based knowledge related to the approach. An essential element underpinning improvement through the approach is the use of different kinds of evidence, which are seen as an essential contribution to improvement of the learning environment and professional learning and development of the teaching staff (PLD). Central to the approach, is a mapping of the learning environment in the participating ECEC-service, carried out 2-3 times at 2-year intervals, and with five groups of respondents: 4-5-year-old children, key-adult of each 4-5-year-old child, the teaching staff, leaders and the parents. In the approach, data from the mappings are used as an essential indicator of quality and as a trigger for targeted evidence-informed PLD initiatives. The presentation will draw on results from a case study conducted in a Danish municipality, which since 2016 has been implementing the approach in its 40 ECEC-services. The study investigates the use of evidence related to improvement work in ECEC.
