Abstract

This chapter posits that it is important to provide a good conceptualization of China-US rivalry before we can discuss about its impact. It sketches the contours of a changing China-US economic relationship in the past decades that evolved from one of complementarity to one of antagonism, which has now turned into a strategic competition as both countries compete for global influence and economic dominance. The objective of this chapter is to contribute to conceptualizing the trajectory of China-US rivalry and analyzing its impact on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Two theoretical perspectives - world system theory and the Kautsky-Lenin debate on intra- and inter-capitalism relationships - are considered inspiring to illuminate the dialectic dynamics of the China-US competition. The conclusion is that the LAC region is facing a complexity of both opportunities and challenges brought about by great power rivalry. Both advantages and disadvantages are two sides of the same coin in connection with both China’s increasing presence in the region and the impact of the China-US rivalry.
